Lecture: Adult neurogenesis and mental health
Prof. Sandrine Thuret (King's College London)
Prof. Sandrine Thuret leads the Adult Neurogenesis & Mental Health Laboratory. The central theme of her lab is adult hippocampal neurogenesis, which is implicated in memory formation and mood regulation. In her group investigates how environmental and molecular mechanisms controlling the production of these adult-born neurons impact on mental health. They study neurogenesis in healthy aging as well as in the context of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and depression. By approaching neurogenesis in health and disease, the strategy is two folds:
- Validating the neurogenic process as a target for prevention and pharmacological interventions.
- Developing neurogenesis as a biomarker of disease prediction and progression.
She is Deputy Head of the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience and the Chair of King’s Research Degrees Examination Board. Prof. Sandrine advocates diversity at King’s College London. She is a Gender Equality Champion in the faculty.

A professora Sandrine Thuret lidera o Laboratório de Neurogênese e Saúde Mental de Adultos. O tema central de seu laboratório é a neurogênese hipocampal adulta, implicada na formação da memória e na regulação do humor. Em seu grupo, investiga como os mecanismos ambientais e moleculares que controlam a produção desses neurônios nascidos adultos influenciam a saúde mental. Eles estudam a neurogênese no envelhecimento saudável, bem como no contexto de doenças como Alzheimer e depressão. Ao abordar a neurogênese em saúde e doença, a estratégia é duas dobras:
Validação do processo neurogênico como alvo para prevenção e intervenções farmacológicas.
Desenvolvimento da neurogênese como biomarcador de previsão e progressão da doença.
Ela é vice-chefe do Departamento de Neurociência Básica e Clínica e presidente do Conselho de Exames de Graus de Pesquisa de King. Sandrine defende a diversidade no King's College London. Ela é uma das defensoras de igualdade de gênero no corpo docente do King's College.
