  • 1. What is R?

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

    Topics:

    • R is a free implementation of a dialect of the S language, a statistics and graphics environment created by John Chambers and others at the Bell Telephone Laboratories.
    • S is a high-level programming language.
    • The earliest beginnings of S came from discussions in the spring of 1976, among a group of five people at Bell Labs: Rick Becker, John Chambers, Doug Dunn, Paul Tukey and Graham Wilkinson.
    • S-PLUS is a commercial system based on S.
    • The R project was started in 1992 in Auckland, New Zealand, by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, also known as “R & R” of the Statistics Department of the University of Auckland.
    • Since 1997, R is being developed by an international team, the R Core Team.
    • John Chambers became a member of the core team.
    • The current R is the result of a collaborative effort with contributions from all over the world.
