The Classifications of Signs (I): 1867 - 1885
Abstract: The paper tracks the modifications Peirce brought to the classification of signs and its theoretical rational between 1867 and 1885. These changes are: (1) the shift from a grounding in speculative psychology to one in logic; (2) the integration of the three kinds of sign into the work of logic; (3) the consequent modifications brought to the criteria for each of the classes. These changes look forward to the progressive pragmaticisation of semioticand hence, to the elaboration of its role in Pragmatism.
