Dr. Ana Paula Lepique
Dept. of Immunology - Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Sao Paulo
Cancer is a chronic disease, where a complex tumor microenvironment changes with time due to alterations in tumor cells and modulation of immune responses. Dr Lepique is interested in how chemical signals generated in the tumor microenvironment modulate local and systemic immune responses. She focuses on the role of cytokines, as G-CSF and IL-6, which activate STAT3, and also metabolites, as lactate, secreted by tumor cells.
Dr Lepique's group has been working with the hypothesis that understanding local and systemic effects of the tumor on the immune system may help in design of therapeutic protocols that may increase the efficacy of therapeutic vaccines, anti-checkpoint blockade antibodies or even chemo and radiotherapy.
