Academic Support

Academic support refers to all the support and help that a team will provide you based on your academic or personal needs. Distance teaching involves many more than one teacher. It takes a team of people to support a distance class. This team consists of the following persons.

Facilitators

Gilvania de Sousa Gomes - gigilvania@yahoo.com.br
Iolanda Cláudia Sanches Catarino - iolandasanchescatarino@gmail.com
Luana Zanetti Trindade - luanazanetti@fearp.usp.br
Natalia Del Angelo Aredes - nataliadel.aredes@gmail.com
Ricardo Rocha de Azevedo - ricardo.azevedo@usp.br

They will encourage you to establish regular and open communication via e-mail regarding any academic questions related to this course, as well as give you appropriate feedback on your efforts. They will also help you with any concerns you may have adapting to the technology and make an effort to shorten the geographical distance in order to help you be successful in this online course.

Please contact them for any assistance you may need. Both of them will help you with questions related to course content. Prof. Dutra will help you with questions related to the technology and Moodle.

Mentors

Mentoring has been defined in a variety of ways. For the purpose of this online course, we will use the definition of mentoring developed by Daloz in his 1999 book “Mentor: Guiding the journey of adult learners,” published by Jossey-Bass.

“A mentor supports the development of a learner, which includes helping the learner gain the necessary skills and knowledge to function effectively in a given environment.”

There are three types of mentors in this course:

    1. Facilitators as Mentors - Your facilitators, Professors Lani and Dutra will coach, guide and support you in many ways.
    2. Peers as Mentors - Your peers will help you by giving you feedback when you participate in discussion forums and course activities.
    3. E-mentor- The e-mentor for this course is Felipe Amaral, a Brazilian master's student at the University of New Mexico, USA, who is an expert in online learning and multimedia development. Felipe will contribute his time to support the development of a group of learners to achieve a group goal through the use of electronic communications. Felipe has experience in distance education and online learning, as well as a good understanding of how to facilitate collaborative group activities online. Felipe has also helped with the adaptation of this course for Brazil as it was initially developed for Sri Lanka academics.
