The value-laden adjectives, "noble" and "honest," are tossed around frequently in Shakespeare's play, and yet the action of the play forces audiences to question their meaning. What makes Othello noble, or what makes him seem noble? How is that label connected to the constant reference to Othello as an "other," namely "the Moor"? And why does everyone in the play, not just Othello, think of Iago as "honest" when the audience knows his scheming? How does Shakespeare create and then undermine these images of worth, and what finally are we to think of these men by the end of the play?

Highlights of a debate held on Sunday 9 August 2015 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was the second in a series of supporting discussions bringing together a variety of expert speakers and commentators to discuss issues and topics raised by our summer season of plays, including The Merchant of Venice, Othello and The Jew of Malta. Speakers discuss whether Othello can be considered a racist play. The debate drew on our then current production, and examined what it means to stage a contemporary interpretation of the play. You can hear more by clicking the ‘i’ icon on the top right of the film to skip to the audio recording of any of the speakers, or to the full length audio recording of the event.

In the second of our new series, Behind Closed Doors, the Company of Romeo & Juliet take you into the heart of the play’s journey from page to stage, offering a rare insight into the complex discussions that often take place in a rehearsal room and form an essential part of ensuring the play speaks to audiences today. Director Ola Ince, and Actors Alfred Enoch & Sargon Yelda, are joined by Psychotherapist Rachael Williams for an honest discussion around mental health. This film was originally made in July 2020 between national lockdowns, and before rehearsals for our current production of Romeo & Juliet began in May 2021. Some of the content of this discussion may not reflect the final production. Behind Closed Doors is a series of mini documentaries looking at how each play in our Summer 2021 season can help us explore the social, political and cultural issues of our modern world. Behind Closed Doors is supported by Warner Media. Discover more about our Summer 2021 season: https://bit.ly/GlobeSummer2021 Discover more about Romeo & Juliet: https://bit.ly/GlobeRomeo2021

Noted author and literary critic Harold Bloom provides his unparalleled analysis of Shakespeare's tragic love story. Focusing his attention squarely on the role Juliet plays in the play, Bloom argues that it is her characterization and dialogue that marks the beginning of Shakespeare's maturity as an artist. In this tale we see what may be the definitive portrait of a woman in love, and indeed, Juliet's ability to find words for complicated emotions is a major reason Romeo and Juliet have become the romantic ideal.

Puck..... "If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have slumb'red here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend. And, as I am honestPuck, If we have unearned luck Now to scape the serpent's tongue, We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call. So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends." -
Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to be marrying Hermia… When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods and wander into the midst of a dispute between the king and queen of the fairies. Shakespeare put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface. Michelle returns to the Globe having previously played the Princess of France in Love’s Labours Lost (2007). Peter Brook is joined on stage at the British Library by original cast members Sir Ben Kingsley and Frances de la Tour and Shakespeare scholar Peter Holland to discuss his radical staging of 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' at the RSC in 1970.

Sally Jacobs designed a set consisting of a brilliantly-lit white box which replaced the traditional Dream set design of pretty forest and classical Athenian court. The actors wore bright silks and performed circus skills such as plate-spinning and trapeze-swinging, inspired by Chinese acrobats.
By doubling the roles of Oberon and Theseus and those of Titania and Hippolyta (played by Alan Howard and Sara Kestelman), Brook made it clear that the Fairy King and Queen were the alter egos of the mortal rulers. In this way, Brook suggested that the conflicts and erotic adventures of the nocturnal wood were the uncontrollable eruption of subconscious fears and desires.

This note describes and analyzes a full-length, archival recording of Peter Brook's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1970) long thought to be lost, but recently rediscovered by the author. Now preserved on DVD, it is available to scholars at the Royal Shakespeare Company Archives, housed at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Peter Brook's landmark production featured a white box and trapeze set designed by Sally Jacobs. Brook approached the play with deliberate radicalism, taking up the baton from Granville-Barker almost 60 years earlier who innovatively presented the play in London on an apron stage with minimal set. Please consider subscribing to our channel for More Insights: https://www.youtube.com/user/Shakespe... The 1970 Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production of A Midsummer Night's Dream was directed by Peter Brook, and is often known simply as Peter Brook's Dream. It opened in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon and then moved to the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End in 1971. It was taken on a world tour in 1972–1973. Brook's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream for the RSC is often described as one of the 20th century's most influential productions of Shakespeare, as it rejected many traditional ideas about the staging of classic drama.
