    • Dear All,

      Since my previous message about the end of the semester, I've received six answers (morning=3 and evening=3) asking for/suggesting a reduction of activities, due to the amount of work being done to other disciplines. One also asked me to submit the two assessments (final test and seminar) to your vote.

      So, I'd like to explain why I think both are important and leave it for you to discuss the issue (this forum allows for everybody to read everybody else's comments). Your discussion will hopefully give me a picture of how most students feel about the proposed form of assessment, which is based on the original program.

      Reasons why I think the two are important:

      a) we need three more classes for the semester to be recognized as valid. If groups agree to record their presentation on video, we may substitute one or more of our class meetings for access to the presentations (depending on how many there are);

      b) part of the students have already presented their seminar. Having everyone doing the same type of activity provides a more solid basis for fair assessment;

      c) seminars and final paper/test are different forms of assessments:

      c1) the seminar is a group task and requires tackling one topic in a deeper way;

      c2) the final assessment (paper or class test) is individual and aims at wrapping up the contents studied during the semester);

      d)  the final paper is being thought of as a sort of “home test”, not a long paper. It may also substitute for a class meeting.

      Finally, my mail was basically an attempt to cater for the needs of students who will be away in July and might be harmed by the strike. Of course, the natural course is to wait for the strike to be over and resume our meetings. So, now, the floor is yours to state what you think/how you feel about the issue.

      Yours,

      Beth.
