O curso propõe uma leitura atenta da obra Il Principe (1513), de Nicolau Maquiavel, explorando referências antigas e modernas que possam ter interesse intrínseco com a obra, bem como o contexto histórico e intelectual em que foi produzida.
O objetivo principal é ampliar o repertório teórico a respeito da obra, abordando-a principalmente como tratado político retórico. Também se pretende discutir algumas interpretações contemporâneas acerca da mesma obra.
Objectives: The course focuses on a close reading of Il Principe (1513) by Niccolò Machiavelli, considering background materials that are also of intrinsic interest. As a political treatise, the work is approached as a piece of rhetoric. Another aim is to discuss a variety of contemporary interpretations that have been produced based on that work.
Rationale: Machiavelli’s Il Principe is one of the most controversial works in Western political theory. The course will pursue the reasons for the relevance of that work, as it endeavours to provide the students with the analitical tools that are required for understanding different perspectives on the same text.
