In this course we will study some developments in modern and contemporary theatre, in U.S. and European contexts, analyzing plays which significantly present formal issues related to the contexts and Zeitgeist they relate to, whether exploring private or social spheres. Starting from the review of former bourgeois drama, and based on Peter Szondi’s theory of the modern drama, we will then examine the pervading crisis of drama related to developments (and discontinuities) in dramatic movements such as Realism/ Naturalism and Epic Theatre. We will simultaneously study formal elements related to themes and representations of modern and subsequently contemporary drama.Throughout the semester, we shall discuss the ways that the referred plays variously resist or reinforce social and moral values of the cultural, historical and political contexts from which they emerge, and how these relate to issues of theatrical form, rupture and ideological affirmation or resistance.
