The course will examine the impact of feminist theory and practice in a series of topics that are an integral part of the study of international relations: feminist critiques of IR theory; women and development in the context of globalization; political participation, including the impact of gender quotas; women and war/violence against women; and postcolonial and decolonial perspectives on human rights. An ongoing issue for the class is the degree to which feminist theory has moved away from its “Western” liberal roots, and the implications of that in a world that is increasingly multipolar, and in which domestic politics are becoming more nationalist and populist, and often reflecting a conservative backlash against women’s human and reproductive rights.
