The aim of this course is to enable geosciences graduates to adapt their skills to emerging technologies in electronic/digital field data collection and model building. The focus of the training is on the building, iteration and validation of subsurface geological models in 2D and 3D, with an emphasis on the use of an accessible and dynamic professional software suite; the Move software suite, originally developed by Midland Valley Exploration Ltd.  Participants will receive advanced training focused on 3D structural modelling of the subsurface using a cutting-edge professional software package developed for the energy and resource exploration industry.

Content:

1: Introduction to restoration, structural modelling and validation techniques
 Introduction to Move suite
Understanding uncertainty and risk in geological modelling
Importing, conditioning and digitising your data
Model building using maps and sections
Importing and exporting data from Move

2: Validation Techniques to Improve Geological Models Using Move, 2D Kinematic Modelling and 3D Kinematic Modelling
Validation techniques to improve geological models
Understand the uses of forward modelling for guiding interpretation
Kinematic Validation Techniques: Line length balance, block restoration and jigsaw fit
Modelling Kinematic Evolution: Sequential restoration and Forward modelling
The 2D and 3D forward modelling algorithms for horizon deformation over faults
The tools that allow handling of sedimentation and erosion during forward modelling in 2D

3: Advanced Session - 2D Kinematic Modelling
Conditioning of subsurface data and raw horizon interpretations
Using constrained model building and structural validation techniques to improve interpretations in areas of poor or incomplete data
Forward modelling and concept testing to validate an interpretation and better understand structural evolution
Sequential restoration to reduce the risk associated with exploration and production
Advanced structural analysis for addressing more complex exploration and production issues

4. Participants who are currently working on their own research projects are welcome to bring their own datasets, discuss openly their challenges, and will receive feedback f providing tips and best practice workflows specific to their projects.
