This course presents the fundamentals of Vlasov´s rod theory for the
analysis of thin-walled open section members, and its application to the linear
analysis of steel structures. It also presents the fundamentals of the
geometrically exact rod theory, its particularization to thin-walled open
section rods, and its application to the nonlinear analysis of steel structures
(theoretical formulation and finite element solution). The computation of
global buckling loads in steel structures is fully exploited. A comparison of results
between Vlasov´s theory and the geometrically exact theory is conducted.
Analysis of post-buckling behavior.
This course deals with theoretical aspects that are of
utmost importance to the analysis and design of framed steel structures. The
topics covered are fundamental to the understanding of the structural behavior
of thin-walled open section members, and the corresponding design criteria
currently in use in all design codes throughout the world. The use of a
geometrically exact rod theory for the nonlinear analysis of such structures
allows for an accurate study of its lateral displacements and overall stability,
which are crucial aspects in most framed steel structures. The approach by
means of the finite element method and nonlinear analysis allows the student to
familiarize with state-of-the-art techniques in advanced structural analysis.
