This Graduate seminar intends to showcase new developments in the social studies of the economy and economics. It approaches economy and economics as mutually constituting spheres of social processes and knowledge practices that assemble such processes as economic – or economize them. This course aims at exploring how this assemblage that comprises economic reality (as a social reality) and steer its futures comes into being through the examination of recent studies that explore economic knowledge and practices in a broad range of settings, such as markets, households, state planning, measurement, regulation, and welfare agencies, central banks, international organizations, financial self-help groups, firms, credit rating agencies, and informal sectors. Through exemplary studies, it also presents the current debates of the field and offers analytical tools for students to deploy in their own social studies of the economic life and knowledge.
