  • In this section we discuss imaging techniques and photometry.

    • Imagers and Filters


      In this class we discuss imagers (in the sense of instruments capable to form and record an image) and filters. We focus on optical and near infrared.

    • fits files

      In this lecture, we see what the "fits" format is and we use a specific image as a test to see the basic functions of ds9.

    • Data reduction

      In this lecture, we focus on the basic steps of data reduction (removing bias and flat), what they are and how to deal with them in IRAF (I promise, I am preparing how to do it with Python, spoiler, it's all here: https://ccdproc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html ).

      I also briefly comment on fringes, bad pixels (and bad columns).

    • CCD Characterisation

      In this lecture, we overview the  main characteristics of a CCD: readout noise, gain and linearity. We learn how to measure them and we insist on the importance of monitoring them.

    • Photometry

      In this class, we go through the basic principle of photometry (in particular, aperture photometry).

      We also discuss magnitudes (both Vega and AB) and calibrations.

    • Virtual Observatory


      I was not thinking to speak about the Virtual Observatory so early but some tools which can be helpful for your test, are VO tools (Topcat and Aladin), so I offer you these slides which I prepared for Prof.Gastão's course http://www.astro.iag.usp.br/~gastao/aga0513/
