The goal of this course is to assist graduate students in developing their ability to design and conduct research studies and develop theories and theoretical frameworks. The emphasis is on theory building and research using such qualitative approaches, as case studies and grounded theory, and one of the approaches, based on quantitative research – Dubin’s method of theory building. In addition, students will learn how to write and publish integrative literature reviews, conceptual papers, and papers proposing theoretical frameworks. The course utilizes readings and examples from HRD, organizational learning, leadership and leadership development, human resource management, and organization studies fields. By the end of this course students will be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of the philosophical foundations of theory and theory development; 2. Describe current approaches to research and theory building; 3. Examine different perspectives on research and theory building; 4. Develop critical thinking skills necessary to understand, interpret, and evaluate research and theories in human resource development and adult education; 5. Identify, compare and critique examples of theory building efforts; 6. Construct a theory or conceptual framework in a particular area of professional interest; 7. Critically review research literature in a particular area of study; 8. Recognize personal barriers to effective academic writing and develop a plan for overcoming these barriers. *** O objetivo deste curso é ajudar os alunos de pós-graduação a desenvolver a sua capacidade de projetar e realizar estudos e desenvolver teorias e quadros teóricos. A ênfase está na construção de teoria e pesquisa, utilizando tais abordagens qualitativas, estudos de caso e teoria fundamentada, e uma das abordagens, com base em pesquisa quantitativa - o método de construção da teoria do Dubin. Além disso, os alunos irão aprender a escrever e publicar revisões integrativas da literatura, artigos conceituais, artigos e propondo quadros teóricos. O curso utiliza leituras e exemplos de áreas de RH e afins (aprendizagem organizacional, liderança e desenvolvimento de liderança, gestão de recursos humanos, e os estudos de empreendedorismo).
