The database includes records of mining induced displacement and resettlement events. Records are structured around “events” rather than “mining projects” on the basis that a mining project will often undertake, or induce, several displacements over the course of its lifecycle. In this dataset each instance of displacement is treated as an “event”.
MIDR events are under-reported and scholars have called for improved visibility over how mining companies exercise their responsibilities in resettling project affected peoples. This dataset was compiled for researchers, government officials, lenders, company personnel, employees of non-government organisations, and members of the general public to support increased awareness about mining induced displacement and resettlement.
