  • Course basics

    1. How will the course be delivered?

There will be no lectures. We’ll go straight to the designated reading. All attendees must have completed the week’s mandatory reading assignment in order to attend class. They should be ready to offer their interpretations and contribute with those of other colleagues.

The class will meet every other week, for approximately 2 hours. The two week interval should be used for in-depth reading and drafting structural notes on the reading assignments (they will come in handy when you are writing the final paper).

    2. The books

The course will consist of in-depth discussion of chapters of three books:

    • ACKERMAN, Bruce. The Decline and Fall of the American Republic. Cambdrige (MA): Harvard/Belknap, 2013.

BERGER, Raoul. Impeachment: The Constitutional Problems. New York: Bantam Book, 1974.

LABOVITZ, John R. Presidential Impeachment. New Haven (CT): Yale U. P., 1978.

    3. A note to foreign students: course language

The discussions will be held in Portuguese, but comments in English are welcome. Should you have any trouble following the discussion in Portuguese, arrangements can be made in order for you to feel more comfortable: we can all speak slowly, or translate more sophisticated vocabulary.

    4. Assessment of students’ performance

Students will be graded based on their class performance and a final paper. The paper can be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish.
